Lennon originalmente escribió la canción por la fallida campaña gubernamental de Timothy Leary en California en contra de Ronald Reagan, una que terminó abruptamente cuando Leary fue enviado a prisión por posesión de marihuana.
Lennon tocó la guitarra rítmica además de vocalizar la canción. McCartney tocó el bajo y canto armonías, George Harrison la guitarra líder, y Ringo Starr la batería y maracas. Fue producida por George Martin y grabada a finales de julio de 1969 en los estudios Abbey Road.
